Order Ephemeroptera - Mayflies

Select a Mayfly from the drop down menu below.

There are over seven hundred species of Mayflies in North America. They spend almost their entire life inhabiting water in the larval stage. Most Mayfly nymphs require clean well oxygenated environments, but some species inhabit lakes, and ponds. Upon reaching maturity the adult life span as a terrestrial is short lived, ranging from an hour to two or three days depending on species. Unlike Caddisflies, and Stoneflies, once Mayflies emerge from the nymphal stage are void of any mouth parts, and don't eat after leaving the water. Most species have a univoltine life cycle, some have multiple broods during the same season.
